Adoptions are on the increase

Now for a piece of good news. The number of children being adopted in England is on the rise again. This means that more needy children have entered stable permanent homes and more would-be parents have found a child to love.

The number of adoptions has jumped by 12% in the past year, with 3,450 children in care finding permanent new families. The rise suggests that reforms to the system are beginning to bear fruit. In addition to the number of children being approved for adoption, the courts granted 7,160 “placement orders” in the year to March, an increase of 15% on the previous year.

The rise, of 12 per cent in the year from March to March, is encouraging. It comes at a time when Michael Gove and his education department have been urging local authorities to be more open to parents who desperately want to adopt.
